Funded by Arts Council England and spearheaded by the LGBT Foundation, the CREATE Bursary 2023 is part of the Network’s commitment to fostering artistic talent within the LGBTQ+ community. The bursary will provide a financial grant of £1000 to each recipient, along with access to rehearsal space and tailored development support. The selected artists will premiere their works at Hope Mill Theatre’s annual LGBTQIA+ arts festival, TURN ON Fest.
The initiative builds on the success of past recipients like mandla rae and Roma Havers. They utilized similar support to develop their shows "British as a Watermelon," which was featured at the Edinburgh Festival, and "LOB." Other artists who have previously benefited from the Network’s support include Cheddar Gorgeous, a finalist in "RuPaul’s Drag Race UK S3," Jaii Andrew, Jova and The Wave, and Maz Hedgehog.
Dr. Paul Martin OBE, Chief Executive of the LGBT Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing support from Arts Council England. He highlighted the importance of these opportunities in enhancing LGBTQ+ representation in arts and culture and fostering Queer Hope and Joy. The partnership with Hope Mill Theatre and TURN ON Fest is particularly significant in achieving these goals.
Joseph Houston, Artistic Director & Co-Founder of Hope Mill Theatre, echoed this excitement. He emphasized the importance of supporting queer and underrepresented emerging artists, nurturing new voices and stories that reflect the realities and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. The theatre is looking forward to welcoming these artists to TURN ON Fest 2024 and supporting them in their creative journey.
Through initiatives like the CREATE Bursary 2023, the Greater Manchester LGBTQ+ Arts and Culture Network continues to play a crucial role in promoting diversity and inclusivity in the arts, providing a valuable platform for emerging LGBTQ+ artists to showcase their talents and stories.
