In Auckland, New Zealand, a family-friendly drag event turned chaotic when members of a Christian fundamentalist group, Destiny Church, stormed the venue. The incident took place on Saturday, February 15, at Te Atatū library during a children's storytime hosted by a drag king as part of the city's Pride festival.
The event was abruptly canceled when about 50 protesters forcefully entered the library and refused to leave. This led to around 30 children, along with some adults, barricading themselves inside for safety as the protest unfolded.
Amidst the disruption, a 16-year-old girl at a nearby sports event claimed she was assaulted by members of Destiny Church, resulting in a concussion. The local police are now investigating these allegations of assault, with Auckland Police describing the protesters' actions as having "crossed a line."
Inspector Simon Walker, the acting Waitematā district commander, expressed concern over the distress caused to children, library staff, and visitors. He emphasized that no one, especially children, should feel unsafe. He urged anyone who experienced violence during the event to report it either at a local police station or through the official police website.
Walker highlighted the collaborative efforts between the police and Auckland Council to ensure the Pride celebrations proceed safely, celebrating the diversity of the city and the country.
As of now, no arrests have been made, but the police investigation is still in its early stages.
