David Kilmnick, founder and president of the LGBT Network in Long Island, New York, recognized the urgent need for LGBTQ+ inclusive retirement communities after encountering ignorance and denial about LGBTQ+ elders in traditional facilities. This realization led to the creation of The LGBT Network’s LGBT/LGBT Friendly Senior Housing in September 2021, offering 75 affordable housing units with a community center for LGBTQ+ seniors to live openly with their partners.

This initiative is part of a broader movement addressing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ elders, many of whom experienced discrimination throughout their lives. These communities allow them to age with dignity in a supportive environment, continuing to live as their authentic selves without fear of discrimination or the need to hide their identities.

Other pioneering communities include The Palms of Manasota on Florida's Gulf Coast and the Triangle Square Apartments in Los Angeles, both providing safe spaces for LGBTQ+ seniors. These facilities acknowledge the specific needs of LGBTQ+ elders, who often face stigma, discrimination, and lack of family support.

Organizations like AARP and SAGE are actively involved in supporting LGBTQ+ seniors. AARP offers resources tailored to older LGBTQ+ individuals, while SAGE, in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign, developed the Long-Term Care Equality Index to evaluate and improve the inclusivity of retirement communities.

Sandra Newson, vice president of resident services for Carrfour, emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming atmosphere in these communities. At The Residences at Equality Park in Wilton Manors, they ensure an affirming environment from the application process to daily interactions, aiming to eliminate discrimination and hostility.

These communities offer various programs, from meditation workshops to movie screenings and holiday parties, catering to the residents' diverse needs, including those with chronic illnesses or mental health issues. Their goal is to allow LGBTQ+ elders to live safely and proudly without having to hide their true selves.

The impact of such communities is profound, with many seniors expressing that it's the first time they've felt safe to be themselves. This highlights the need for more such facilities, offering a haven where LGBTQ+ seniors can spend their golden years in comfort and authenticity.
